History
The Early Days -
Although rugby was played in Ashington before the first world war, first records of the club in it's present format and location are found in the November 1923 edition of the Ashington Colliery magazine.
The First Match -
Following three practice matches, the club's very first game was against the old enemy Blyth on Saturday 20th October 1933. The final score was Blyth 5 Ashington 3. (We are currently checking whether this was the last time Blyth beat us.) The revival of rugby in the town refers to two previous teams, Ashington and Ashington Hirst, playing in Ashington before the first world war. They were believed to have played on a field in Piggy Moor Lonnen, below Lintonville. The two teams, won separate versions of the Northumberland County Shield in 1908, with Ashington winning the Northumberland Senior Shield and Ashington Hirst winning the Northumberland Junior Cup.
Cup Finalists - The newly reformed club had to wait until 1933 to win their 'first' trophy. They had reached the final of the Northumberland County Senior Shield in 1930 and again in 1932, losing in the first match by a penalty goal in the last five minutes, and in the second by a single point.
